It’s almost February which means both Valentine’s & GALentine’s Day. Aka chocolate season. Aka it’s time to throw a bunch of chocolate into some pies (see: chocolate pie crust).
We all know Banana Cream Pie is delicious—definitely in my top 5 favs. So naturally a Chocolate Banana Cream Pie is right up my alley.
You can’t go wrong with this beauty: chocolate crust, chocolate filling, banana slices, banana cream, whipped cream, & then *sprinkles*…cause duh.
Tell your Valentine to save room for dessert. Or you could just eat it all yourself.
Chocolate Banana Cream Pie
1 prepared single chocolate crust
3 cups heavy cream (divided)
5 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
1/4 cup & 1 tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
pinch of salt
3 egg yolks
1 1/4 cup half and half
1 tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp powdered sugar
sprinkles, optional (ha.)
Make the crust: Roll out your prepared chocolate pie crust, arrange in pie pan, and refrigerate while you prepare the filling.
Make the chocolate filling: Place the chopped chocolate in a heat safe bowl and set aside. Pour 1/2 cup of the heavy cream into a small saucepan. As soon as it reaches a boil, remove from heat and pour over your chopped chocolate. Allow to sit for 1 minute, then stir continuously until all the chocolate is incorporated to a smooth mixture. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes.
Pour 1/2 cup of heavy cream into a separate bowl and beat with a mixer until soft peaks form. Fold the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture. Spread into the bottom of the pie crust. Refrigerate while you prepare the banana cream.
Make the banana cream: In a medium size saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt, egg yolks, and half and half. Stir until smooth. Cook while stirring over medium-high heat until thickened and bubbling. Remove from heat and add in the butter and vanilla extract. Stir to combine. Pour through a fine mesh strainer over a bowl.
Allow the custard mixture to cool in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Remove the chocolate filled pie from the refrigerator. Top the chocolate layer with sliced bananas. Spoon the cooled custard on top and smooth into an even layer.
Make the whipped cream: Beat the remaining 2 cups of heavy cream with the powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Top your pie with the whipped cream. Chill the pie for 2 hours to allow to set. When you are ready to serve, top with sliced bananas and lots of sprinkles.
